Rapunzel

Digital illustration, ART 266: Illustration Studio, Fall 2024

Based on the classic fairy tale of Rapunzel. The brief was to represent a classic fairytale story through composition, icons, indexes and symbols. I represented the story with objects instead of characters, using the braid, the red ribbon and the scissors.

Process

01 Thumbnails

Thirty thumbnails of the tower, vines, braids, windows and scissors.

Rapunzel thumbnails 1 to 15: towers, vines, braids, eyes and windows. Rapunzel thumbnails 16 to 30: braids, scissors and trees in tall frames.
02 Drafts

An early tower-and-tree draft and a first version of the braid and scissors.

Rapunzel draft: a gnarled tree beside a tower with golden hair spiralling down. Rapunzel draft: the braid with star flowers and gold stork scissors on a dark streaked ground.
