Graphic designer, December 2025 to June 2026
The idea for the cover came from an AJIS editing meeting I sat in on, where students worked through each paragraph carefully. It shows Palo Verde blossoms, which were blooming across Arizona that spring, growing out of an open book toward a reaching hand.
Since the journal is interdisciplinary, I combined three mediums on the cover: hand-drawn illustration, my own photography and vector typography. Inside, I laid out all 52 pages, including the front matter, a special feature on the Fronteridades internship program and four peer-reviewed articles, and prepared the issue for print and open-access digital publication.
I worked with a 10-person editorial team to meet print deadlines and updated the journal’s logo for business cards and t-shirts. The Editor-in-Chief recognized the cover in the issue’s opening letter.
Read the issue at the University of Arizona LibrariesI sketched these during an editing meeting. I mapped out words first, then drew fifteen thumbnails of hands, books and plants.
Photos I took of spring blooms, including the Palo Verde, and the open book used on the cover.
Three drafts before the final cover.
